Everybody agrees on that: Paris is a wonderful city. That is the reason why millions of tourists take so many pictures of the city every year, just to bring a piece of it back to their country. Taking nice pictures is far more difficult and the difference between what we actually see and the final result we get on the photograph is quite often disappointing.

Not for everybody! Serge Ramelli, a talented French photographer, does very well as he manages to go further to the reality. The original result is obtained through a method called “double exposure”. Various photographs of the same spot are taken at different points of the day. The result is a chimerical Paris overwhelmed by a supernatural light and threatening clouds.

Serge Ramelli’s pictures were exhibited at the Hotel de Noailles last May and it was quite a success. If you are tired of your own pictures and want to hang a beautiful memory of Paris in your living room, Serge Ramelli’s work is displayed on his website and stands there at your disposal… Anyway, the exhibition was astonishing and people really enjoyed it!

Turner (1775-1851) was highly unusual in that he responded to the works of the old Masters and his contemporaries throughout his lengthy career. Driven by a powerful ambition, he broadened his fields of investigation: topographic watercolours, seascapes, classical landscapes, fantastic landscapes, genre scenes and history paintings.

As Turner himself wished, the exhibition will compare one of his most complex masterpieces, The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire with two of Claude Lorrain’s magnificent visions which inspired it : Sunset at sea and Le Débarquement de Cléopâtre à Tarse.

By deliberately engaging with other painters, Turner developed his dazzling freedom to paint which reached its apogee in the last decade of his career. “Turner and the Masters” is an illustrated demonstration of the way Turner constructed his remarkable vision throughout his long career (a hundred paintings and graphic works from major British and American collections, the Louvre, the Prado and the Tate Britain).

With this exhibition from 19th February to 18th July 2010, the Pinacothèque de Paris is offering a fresh insight into the work of Edvard Munch, one of the most legendary and paradoxically least-known artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This is the first time in 20 years that his work is being shown in Paris, and indeed in France; the Pinacothèque de Paris is therefore providing art lovers in France with a wonderful opportunity to discover the vision of this great artist, using a simple approach that allows all visitors to understand why he occupies such a significant place in art history.

La Pinacothèque de Paris
Open everyday from 10am to 6pm (9pm on wednesday)
Philippe Andrieu, Chief Pastry Chef at Ladurée, unveils 100 of the prestigious establishment’s recipes adapted for the general public.

It is an expression both of Ladurée excellence, where taste and refinement have always gone hand and hand, and the best the French “art de vivre” has to offer.

An introduction, “La Petite histoire de Ladurée (A brief history of Ladurée)” is the story of how this little bakery, created in 1862 by Louis Ernest Ladurée, came into its own and became a genuine institution of French gourmandise.
Individual memory and the passage of time are recurring themes in the work of Christian Boltanski, who has devised “Personnes” especially for the Monumenta exhibition at the Grand Palais. In this installation combining visual impact and sound, he tackles the question of destiny and the ineluctability of death.

That period produced some of the most famous artists of all time, and above all the one whose name has remained one of the leading references : Rembrandt.

The exhibition will put on an outstanding ensemble of over 130 pieces, including about 60 paintings, 30 graphic works, 10 etchings as well as 10 objects to give an extremely visual representation of that period.

This exhibition wants above all to put forward Rembrandt’s singular role as the most influential artist of his time. He conferred upon his models, whether simple portraits or religious scenes, an unequalled dimension, a density, a human beauty that made of him the fore-runner of modernity, an analyst of souls and consciousness three centuries ahead of his contemporaries.

Pascal Bernier’s cuisine combines the great classics with more personal, gastronomic creations. With its contrasting savours, the menu surprises by its apparent simplicity, proposing dishes in which creativity and elegance rub shoulders with classicism… And it is this superb culinary cocktail which makes eating here such an unforgettable experience.

Le Saut du Loup is an ideal venue for a business lunch, a break between visiting the museum and shopping, an early evening cocktail, or, a dinner for two or with friends.

The restaurant provides a refined, relaxed, contemporary setting for people eager to discover a masterful blend of dishes and savours...

The interior design
Philippe Boiselier’s sober lines and colours play on contrasts between light and dark to modulate the restaurant’s spaces. The furniture is an integral part of this spatial construction. Ample black bench seats divide the space on both levels, and innovative use of materials such as Corian and reflected and indirect light softens the volumes and creates a warm atmosphere of discreet luxury.

Summertime is synonymous with theatre in public gardens, concerts in parks and big-screen cinema under the stars. Here is a quick overview of parisian summer festivals :

<ins>Festivals in the park with the family</ins>

Paris in summer is great for families. Festivals galore offer special events, workshops, games and shows, in the capitals parks and gardens.

The festival "Paris quartier d’été" also seeks to bring events to a public that would not normally go to concert or opera performances. So, from 15 July to 9 August, dance, music, theatre, circus, storytelling and other events take place in parks, gardens, on avenues, at monuments and other outdoor venues. For the 20th anniversary of the event, there will be 33 sites, 35 shows, 115 performances and 260 artists. Among the sites hosting events, families will enjoy the Palais-Royal gardens, the garden of the Musée du quai Branly, Saint-Eustache church, the park of Buttes-Chaumont and the Luxembourg gardens.

Some of the summer season’s top events include the festival Sous la plage, which will be held on 12 and 13 July at the port de Javel, a few minutes from the Eiffel Tower and on the lawns of the André-Citroën park. The settingis already a firm favourite with families who enjoy the water fountains where kids love to play and the expansive grassy areas, popular with everyone from tiny tots to adults. For its seventh edition, the festival offers as usual a happy mixture of family, trendy and unusual events. On the programme for Saturday, fun-based electro workshops, offbeat walks and musical embarkations. Sunday will see the highpoint of the festival: a huge dance with the emphasis on the music of Istanbul. Before the concert, from 6pm, adults and children will be able to
practice the art of the Turkish tango and Oriental dancing.

Fans of classical music, vocal and instrumental, can attend the 9th edition of the European festival Jeunes Talents, from 10 to 30 July. The Hôtel de Soubise, in the Marais, will be staging outdoor concerts given by 53 young musicians from all over Europe and other parts of the world, from the major conservatoires.

<ins>A summer music season</ins>

Music has the reputation for calming the spirit, and so you would expect it to have an even greater effect when played outdoors in parks and gardens. This is the idea of the summer season of music festivals in Paris, which feature music from all around the world.

One of the highpoints of summer is the Paris Jazz Festival, which takes place in the gardens of the Parc Floral,
to the east of Paris, in the Bois de Vincennes.
The idea is to create different improvised venues within the park: a “Clarière des impros (Impros clearing)” will bring musicians and the public together for improvised workshops whilst the “Jardinophone (gardenophone)” proposes sound structures, world games, special events and instrument making workshops which question the relation between music and nature.

The Classique au vert is another key festival which takes place in the Parc floral every weekend from 1 August to 20 September. Performances take place at 4pm and this year the public will be able to discover Mozart’s Parisian years, the Paris waltz at Vienna, the spirit of the roaring twenties and even the cinema of Vladimir Cosma. There will also be special events linked to the concerts: treasure hunts, pre-concert meetings with a musicologist to gain a better understanding of the concert which follows, walks around the park with botanists and, after the performance, the possibility of meeting some of the performers.

Botany and classical music enthusiasts will also enjoy the 10th edition of the festival Solistes aux serres d’Auteuil. The first part of the festival was held in June and will be followed by a second part from 28 August to 13 September in the wonderful setting of the Auteuil hothouses: these glass and metal structures are surrounded by a richly planted garden. This popular series of concerts with different soloists, mainly pianists, are accessible to all thanks to the moderate cost of tickets (free for children).

The festival Jazz à la Villette attracts the big names in blues, jazz, but also electro and hip-hop from 1 to 13 September. Some 200 artists and 50 groups are expected for this event at the big La Villette park in the north of Paris. Among the line-up: Hank Jones, Ahmad Jamal, Ornette Coleman, Ron Carter, Seun Kuti, Amadou et Mariam, De La Soul, Yael Naim, John Zorn, etc.

<ins>“Cinema paradiso” in Paris</ins>

with two major festivals.

The festival Cinéma en plein air takes place in the Parc de la Villette. A huge inflatable screen is installed on the
grassy Prairie du Triangle and the public gather to watch films screened daily, from nightfall. Free to the public,
each screening gathers hundreds of film buffs who either sit on the grass or hire a deckchair (6.50 euros). This
year, the theme of the New World is the common thread which runs through the programme. From 15 July to
16 August, the public will discover great films like “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Gore Verbinski, “Into the Wild”,
by Sean Penn, “Broken Flowers”, by Jim Jarmush, “Brokeback Mountain”, by Ang Lee, “Golden Door”, by Emanuele
Crialese, “Amistad”, by Steven Spielberg, etc.

The festival Cinéma au clair de lune is celebrating its ninth edition. The particularity of this event, which will take
place from 5 to 23 August, is its nomadic character. Every evening, films are shown in a different district of the
capital. This year, in places as diverse as the place des Vosges, the Seine quayside and the place des Fêtes, spectators will (re)discover “Boudu sauvé des eaux”, the animation thriller “Renaissance”
and films by Claude Berri such as the famous “Tchao pantin”.

Let one of the chefs at the Ecole de Cuisine Alain Ducasse in Paris teach you the difference while they lead you by the hand to the market and show you what is the best produce that day, before you return to the kitchen to cook it. “One of the important points about some of our courses is that you can honestly be completely useless in the kitchen,” says Emanuelle Perrier, director of public relations for the new cooking school, which opens on Monday, “and still come here and have a good time with us.”

Welcome encouragement to those who might be intimidated by the idea of a cooking class in Paris’s posh 16th arrondissement, headed by a famous French chef known - among other things - for being the first to have owned three three-star-ranking restaurants in three different countries simultaneously. But in his new 700 square-metre space Ducasse wants the atmosphere to be relaxed. “It’s a place to get together in for the pleasure of preparing and discovering food,” he told recently.

Ducasse is also catering to all different types of food-lovers. There are ten different courses, from “Traditional cuisine” to “Escapist cuisine, to “Gourmet cuisine”, with classes for half-a-day or a full day (depending on the subject.) There are two levels : experienced and inexperienced. There are also English-speaking chefs for English-only-speaking students.

Actually, you can find several cooking schools in Paris but Ducasse’s new one offers quite a diversity of subjects : “We have everything from a class for six to 11-year-olds to a class on the gourmet cuisine of Alain Ducasse”.

Not that their mission is to focus on the well-known chef’s style : “Many cooking schools just teach their own style", "we will do that but we will also teach other cuisines from other cultures”. The school also offers wine-appreciation and pastry-making classes.
